Clumsy Girl

Jody held her high heels by the straps. She was walking barefoot, the waves licking at her feet. She was too far from home, but the beach was empty on a winter Sunday morning and she couldn’t resist. The water was freezing, but still, it felt wonderful.
She couldn’t believe she had fallen for Steve’s flirting. Again. He always convinced her to spend the night. And they had broken it off months ago. She really needed to stop seeing him. Her sigh puffed in front of her. It was cold after all. A chill went up her spine and she lifted her head. Maybe it was time she got on her way to the subway.
When she reached the street she sat down to strap her heels on. Then someone fell on top of her and they were both lying flat on the ground.
“HEY! Get out of the way!” The person grunted. Jody shoved them off, angrily. It was another girl with dusty convers and her hair half tied up.
“What do you mean get out the way? What’s wrong with you? You’re the one that tripped on me!”
“Oh shut up, man. I just want to get home. You shouldn’t be in the middle of the street.”
“I wasn’t even in the middle!” She protested.
“Yes, you were.” She said raising her head. Their eyes met and her expression shifted. “Jesus, you look so much like Jamie.”
Jody snorted. She couldn’t believe this was happening to her in the middle of her walk of shame. “Tell me she’s pretty, at least.”
“Oh no, she’s a complete idiot,” she started. “But you are,” she muttered, flushing.
Jody giggled at that. “Where are you headed, clumsy girl?” She sighed, the girl actually seemed sweet.
“To the subway,” she replied as she stood. “And you can call me Maddie.” She offered her a hand and pulled her to her feet.
“Good, clumsy Maddie, we can walk together then,” she smirked.
